The global outbreak of Mpox, which began in May 2022, has caused over 85,000 infections across 110 countries. While case numbers in newly affected countries have declined in recent months, many questions remain about the effectiveness of available therapeutics and the duration of protection provided by smallpox vaccines. There are also concerns about unequal distribution of treatments, with many low- and middle-income countries lacking access to antiviral medications and other immune-based therapies. Additionally, untreated or poorly controlled HIV infection has been identified as a significant factor in severe Mpox disease and poor outcomes.
This talk aims to address the current state of the art in Mpox treatment, what is in the pipeline for the future, and how currently available treatments can be used to minimize patient suffering.
