(P477-LB) Knowledge, Attitude and Practices on Sexual History Taking Among Dermatology Residents in the Philippines

Background: The practice of dermatology is not limited to diagnosis of skin, hair and nail diseases but works hand in hand with the diagnosis and management of numerous sexually transmitted infections. A complete sexual history not only plays an important role in the practice of dermatology in the diagnosis and treatment, but also on education of patients on the prevention, treatment, and management of overall sexual health. However, not all physicians are properly trained nor experienced in taking sexual history, which is a challenging communication skill that improves with practice.



Methods: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study that determined the knowledge, attitude and practices among dermatology residents on sexual history taking. A validated questionnaire was used to assess for the knowledge, attitude and practices on sexual history taking among dermatology residents from all training institutions in the Philippines with 120 residents participating in the study. Descriptive statistics as used to summarize all the data gathered from the questionnaires. The mean, standard deviation, frequency and proportion were determined in this study.



Results:

Majority of respondents were knowledgeable on gender identities, sexual practices of the different gender groups, and the terms frequently used in sexual history taking. In terms of attitude, the resulting mean of 3.00 implied that residents have a positive attitude or are comfortable in taking sexual histories, providing counseling on methods to reduce HIV, contraception, and discussion on sexual practices with LGBT patients. In terms of practice, respondents sometimes ask on preferred pronouns, sexual orientation and practices, partner’s sexual history, sexual activities in exchange for monetary and non-monetary items, use of contraceptives and sexual issues and problems.

Conclusion: Considering that sexual history is still regarded as a sensitive topic to many, this study explored dermatology residents’ knowledge, attitude, and practices towards gathering a thorough and appropriate sexual history. Majority of respondents were knowledgeable and comfortable in taking sexual history. However, the lack of practice in routinely taking a complete sexual history, regardless of chief complaint, may pose a concern with regards to proper assessment, diagnosis, and subsequent management of the patient.
